I would also like to take this moment to briefly explain what it means to be a designated REALTOR in the State of Michigan. In Michigan, a person who buys and sells real estate is officially referred to as a “Real Estate Salesperson”.
The term REALTOR designates that someone is licensed and a member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of REALTORS, a distinction I am proud to hold.
A REALTOR must comply strictly with a Code of Ethics, and is held to a high ethical standard.
What does it take to earn the REALTOR designation?
In order to be designated as a REALTOR, an agent must take courses and be able to demonstrate certain skills, knowledge and performance in the real estate industry.
As for being able to work as a REALTOR in Michigan, the state requires the completion of 40 training hours, to be followed by a comprehensive state exam. From then on, it’s required that a REALTOR maintain continuous education each year.
Established more than a century ago in 1913, the official Code of Ethics includes the principles that a REALTOR subscribes to. These include:
• A loyalty to clients
• A legal duty to clients
• A cooperation with competitors
• Truth in advertising and truth in statements
• An agreement not to interfere with exclusive REALTOR/client relationships
The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, or rather LARA, oversees a REALTOR.
